Logos [05-02-2010]

Southern Catholic College is first and foremost a Catholic community of higher education. It is not simply Catholic, nor is it simply an institution of higher education; rather, it is these two synthesized by the bond of community. We are both Catholics and students; our Catholicism and our studentship are not disparate, but united most intimately. The notion of community here means that we understand the relationship between the Church and formal education as such that the two are perfective of each other, and are directed toward the end of knowing, loving, and serving God. It is only by virtue of this unifying principle that we can all work towards the same end, with the same values in mind and heart, and call ourselves a community.

I was very sorry to hear of Southern Catholic’s early closure this spring, and I am praying that the college will be able to re-open soon. Having recently lost my faculty position at a university in Indiana, I have been hoping to find a teaching job a Catholic college that, as you say, “understands the relationship between the Church and formal education [to be] such that the two are perfective of each other, and are directed toward the end of knowing, loving, and serving God.” Such institutions are very few to begin with, and to have one which has shown such a promising start fail to survive would be a grievous blow to the Church and to our society.
